Reading Between the Lines of a Status Page

DT Form Team

What a status history actually reveals

A single incident on a status page tells you very little on its own. A pattern of frequent, similar incidents over time tells you something meaningful about the underlying stability of a service, in a way that no individual status update can convey by itself.

Resolution time is a signal worth watching

How long an incident stays open, from first acknowledgment to full resolution, says something about a team's operational maturity. Consistently long resolution times, even for individually minor incidents, are worth noting more than the raw number of incidents alone.

What good incident communication looks like

A status update that specifically names what's affected, gives a genuine sense of scope, and updates at reasonable intervals as the situation develops is far more useful than a generic 'we are investigating' message that doesn't change meaningfully as time passes.

A postmortem, published after a significant incident is resolved, explaining what happened and what's changing as a result, is one of the stronger signals that an organization is treating incidents as something to genuinely learn from rather than just something to survive.
