How Support Teams Decide What to Prioritize

DT Form Team

Impact and urgency aren't the same thing

A request can feel urgent to the person sending it without necessarily reflecting a broad or severe issue, and conversely, a quietly reported bug can affect far more people than a single loudly urgent request. Good prioritization weighs both genuine impact and genuine urgency, not just whichever request arrived most recently or most insistently.

Why some requests get resolved out of order

An issue actively blocking someone from completing an important, time-sensitive task, a signature deadline, a submission cutoff, reasonably jumps ahead of a general question that has no specific time pressure, even if the general question arrived first.

What this means for how to frame a request

Clearly explaining the actual impact of an issue, what it's currently preventing, and any relevant deadline, helps a support team prioritize appropriately without needing to guess. This isn't about exaggerating urgency; it's about making sure genuine urgency is visible rather than easy to overlook.
